5 Tips for Finding a Good Roofer
When a roof leaks it can go on to cause untold damage in your home. Depending on the nature of the leak, the damage can be slow and insidious, or it can be sudden and catastrophic. Either way, it is liable to cause a huge amount of damage.
Obviously, the first step is to find a roofing contractor to repair any damage that has been caused, and to obviously repair the roof. However, a poor roofer can go on to create more issues in the future. Therefore it is imperative that you find a good roofer to carry out any work that needs doing. But what exactly constitutes as a good roofer? DPR offer some advice.
1. Experience. Experience is king in roofing. With experience a good roofer will be able to find the cause of the problem quicker, and will know exactly how to go about remedying it. This will essentially save valuable time, minimising damage while saving you money and ensuring that your roof is fixed to the highest standard.
2. Free estimates. By offering free estimates roofing companies allow you to compare the services of each. Doing so shows a confidence in their work. However the cheapest is not always the best: if they are offering work at a shockingly low price then there is a good chance they are cutting corners somewhere.
3. Warranties. Any good roofer will offer a comprehensive warranty on their work. To do so means that they are working to the highest of standards. Be wary of those who do not offer a warranty.
4. Accreditations. Professional accreditations are hard to achieve, so to do so demonstrates that the roofer is capable of working to an extremely high standard. It also shows that they are interested in developing and learning, and still invest back into their business.
5. Recommendations and testimonials. Recommendations show that customers were extremely happy with the work that was carried out, and have since gone out of their way to thank and mention the roofing contractor. It is a rare thing for customers to do, so recommendations and testimonials carry a lot of weight behind them.
If a roofer ticks all of the above boxes then you should feel confident in using them to carry out work on your commercial of domestic property. To find out more about the services that DPR roofing provides simply call us on 0113 335 0043.
DPR Carry out Extensive Gutter Cleaning
DPR Roofing is currently half way through our most extensive gutter cleaning project to date. We have been on site at Potters Ballatoni for almost 2weeks now.
Potters Ballatoni recycle glass for other industrial uses. A large portion of what they do includes the grinding and breaking down of waste glass. This creates a simply huge amount of dust. This dust floats in the air before settling on the roof.
The issue in this case is not simply the quantity of dust, but that the dust is so fine. The rainy climate in the UK essentially turns this fine dust into dense, wet sand. Which is incredibly difficult to remove.
We predicted this job would take a few days but it has ended up taking a whole lot longer. Still, our engineers weren’t perturbed. They have simply got their heads down and got to work, scooping and shovelling very slowly indeed.
In this particular case we advised the client that it would be worthwhile considering using DPR on a retained basis, where we would come every 4-6 months and completely clear out the guttering and clean the roof rather than wait 4 years as was the case this time.
Far from being annoyed by the extent of the work we have to carry out, we have relished this opportunity to test our skills. We have used this case as a way to test our capabilities, and though it has proved difficult, we are proud to say it has not beaten us.
If your gutters are clogged and not functioning properly, and could do with clearing out, on a single or repeated basis, then just give DPR a call on 0113 335 0043.
The Importance of Clean Gutters
DPR have worked on both commercial and domestic roofs for over 27 years. It’s safe to say that in this time we have learned a thing or two about roofs. And one of the things we have learned, that could be more important than everything else, is that a roof is a single cohesive unit.
A good roof is the sum of its parts and if any one part is lacking, from the beams to the joists to the tiles then the roof will not perform well as a whole.
One part that is of vital importance, and is seemingly often overlooked, is the guttering.
Water can actually be very damaging. Just think of the way it can rust and destroy exposed metalwork. This is why we have created special routes that rain and excess water takes. These routes typically start at the guttering and end in the main underground drainage system.
However, if at some point this route is interrupted, for example by a blocked gutter, then the water will simply not run where it is supposed to and every drop of water that does not run where it should means it has reached somewhere else and will inevitably lead to some sort of breakdown/corrosion.
This is why it is very important to have clear guttering system. This will enable water to run exactly where it should, and not damage any structures around it.
Some people are capable of doing this themselves. However with domestic properties it is often just thought of as an unpleasant job plus it has its dangers due to height and is put off and put off until it becomes a real issue. In commercial properties it is simply overlooked, and not thought of until a problem arises and stock is at risk.
This is why DPR offer a retained service in which we will regularly visit your site in order to clean your gutters and carry out any maintenance work that needs doing. By taking advantage of this service you can rest easy knowing that we will probably prevent any problem before it arises. If an issue does arise you can contact us knowing we will be round as soon as possible to remedy it.

DPR Bags Exciting, but Slightly Mysterious Client
At the moment our client list is just growing and growing and we are always surprised by the people that approach us. Our latest client is no exception.
Most people will know the name Loomis, but will be hard placed to say exactly what they do. Loomis are a company that moves money round from banks and shops. You’ve probably seen their vans around both at home and abroad plus their staff who wear a lot of protective gear.
They approached us as they wanted to work with a trustworthy name, and knew of our reputation. We are currently providing them with some essential flat roof maintenance work.
Unfortunately, we can’t tell you much else. Loomis have sworn us to secrecy due to the nature of their business, and the amount of cash that moves through the system.
At this point all we can tell you is that we are working with them at a location somewhere in the UK and as well as the flat roof work we have many other jobs lined up with them in the pipeline.
We are proud to work with our clients for many different reasons. Some of our clients are huge, international organisations who have opted for a small local firm to carry out their roof maintenance and servicing. Others, such as Loomis, need other things from us, most of all they need to be able to trust us to not only carry out the work to a high standard, but to also use discretion when doing so.
We are massively proud to be able to add Loomis to our range of commercial clients.
If you would like to learn about our commercial roofing services then just call us on 0113 335 0043.

Commercial Roof Repairs
Out of the many component parts of a commercial building, the roof must take the most abuse. Constantly exposed to the elements roofs take an incredible beating every day. In winter they have to hold during the extreme cold, as well as staying water proof and also supporting an incredible weight if it ever snows.
In summer the heat (when we get some) can distort the structure of a building, so the roof has to be able to move with this, while still staying intact and remaining water proof for those severe summer showers of which we get plenty of.
They have to do this all day, every day.
So it is understandable that even the best made roofs will need a bit of a touch up every now and then. This is where DPR comes in. For over 27 years we have provided commercial roofing repairs to Leeds and the surrounding areas.
We can aid commercial business in two ways. The first being to offer on the spot repairs. We know when your roof breaks it becomes unsafe to those in and around the building. There is also a high chance it will then begin to leak, which could cause untold damage and stop normal business practices, ultimately costing your business more and more money.
The other service we can provide is to offer maintenance. By performing regular maintenance and servicing we can seriously reduce the risk of something going wrong with your roof. And the old adage is always true: prevention is infinitely better than the cure.
Our servicing packages run on annual basis and can be tailored to suit your needs and budget, with inspections taking place every 6-8 weeks, quarterly or every 6 months.
We are trusted by and regularly work with some of the biggest organisations in the country, such as Plus Net, Barclays, Department for Education and Asda to name just a few.
If you are in need of commercial roofing repair in the Leeds area, just give us a call on 0113 335 0043.
Advantages of a Slate Roof
Slate roofing used to be the norm for most houses and there was a thriving trade built up around it, with roofers being considered skilled craftsman.
However, with the onset of modern manufacturing nowadays you will more likely see mass manufactured roof tiles. These are a perfectly practical and cost effective roofing solution that is ideal for many homes. However, there is no denying that they lack some of the character and, dare we say it, soul, that slate can offer.
As well as this character slate offers a whole host of practical benefits too. Here is a short list of just a few of those.
1. Appearance – The most obvious advantage of a slate roof is its appearance. A slate roof will instantly add a level of class to any home. As slate is a natural material each slate will look different which gives a textured appearance. There are also many different types of slate available, so there is a huge array of shades and tones to choose from, from blues to browns and purples. It will also age beautifully.
2. Longevity – Slate is simply one of the best roofing materials available. A properly installed slate roof will last upwards of 100 years, giving incredible value for money.
3. Durability – As slate is a natural stone it has fantastic physical properties. As it is incredibly dense it is naturally waterproof. It is also very resistant to temperature change, so it will not distort in summer or winter. Slate is resistant to mould and fungus which makes it incredibly maintenance free.
4. Adds value to home – The benefits of slate are well known, so having a slate roof installed onto your property will automatically add value to it.
DPR roofs have been installing slate roofs since we began in 1989. This means we have over 27 years’ experience installing roofs in the Yorkshire area. Our engineers are amongst the best around, so you can rest assured that your slate roof will be installed to the highest standard. To find out more just give us a call on 0113 335 0043.
Flat roof renewal at Ardsley Social Club
DPR Roofing underway with works at East and West Ardsley Social Club after being contacted by their steward who noticed problems with their flat roofs at the popular local site.
Three of the large flat roofs at the venue were leaking into the main building which prevented the club from hosting events safely, and utilising all of their facilities.
The three roofs all require a re-roof, with the DPR team adding brand new felt roofing in the desired places. Felt roofing is a great way of roofing and if done properly, can last over 20 years before needing any attention or care.
The venue is popular with many of the locals and has upcoming events including birthday parties, social nights and presentation evenings. It is also busy during the European Championships showing many of the live games.
This inquiry came through our Leeds Roofs chat facility with the contracts manager contacting Danny (one of our office work schedulers) before we arranged a survey/site visit to assess the damage caused by the leaking roofs. If you have any questions you can always ask us and we will get back to you quickly.
If you have a problem with your flat roof, both on domestic or commercial buildings like the Ardsley Social Club, and require a patch repair or a full re-roof, please do not hesitate to contact our team. Flat roofs have a bad reputation for having problems, and often these are caused from problems at the very beginning.

New guttering added at Country Style Foods Leeds
DPR has recently added brand new guttering to the building of Country Style Foods, after the existing guttering had fallen into a state of disrepair. This was in addition to other multiple roof repairs needed. This is the second phase of works for the large food supplier in Leeds.
By using a clever technique, the DPR team added brand new guttering inside the existing guttering shell, adding complete new runs to the gutter. This is an instant though bespoke system transforming the gutter immediately into a fully working unit again yet retaining the original look.
Guttering plays an important role in removing water from the roof safely and when it fails, can cause considerable damage to the building and leave walkways below unsafe not to mention stock damage. If you, like Country Style Foods, have problems with your gutters or roofs, it is important to get them solved quickly.
At DPR we, recommended a professional company checks your commercial guttering at least once a year. If you are in that situation, please act before it is too late and call one of our office team today. We can carry out a full inspection backed up with quality photographs, clean all manner of debris from the gutters and recommend any works which might needs carrying out now or in the future.

Benefits of green roofs
Green roofs have many advantages that not only benefit buildings, but also have various social, economic and environmental benefits. They have been growing in popularity consistently, and it’s not hard to see why, considering how much there is to gain by investing in them. Here are just some of the benefits that can be gained from green roofs:
Increases roof lifespan
The lifespan of a roof depends on the design of it, the materials used and the weather conditions of the surrounding area. Most roofs can last for anywhere up to around 35 years. Green roofs, which create barriers between the roof itself and the waterproofing underneath, are able to function effectively for up to 50 years, which is a considerable difference to normal roofs.
Soundproofing
Thanks to the growth medium, the grass itself, other plants, and trapped layers of air, green roofs are able to provide great soundproofing properties compared to traditional roofs. This could be of great benefit to community buildings as well as industrial premises where loud, disruptive sound is prominent.
Reduces energy use
When roofs are poorly optimised, either through bad insulation or something else, they increase energy use throughout the building – whether by increasing the need of heating in the winter or the need of artificial cooling during the summer. Green roofs are shown to have a positive impact on a building energy consumption, thereby saving money.
Tackles climate change
Buildings cause a huge amount of the carbon dioxide emissions in the United Kingdom, with 26% coming from homes and 18% from other buildings. Climate change is a real problem that needs to be tackled now rather than later – with the implementation of green roofs, this can be done – due to the reduced energy consumption that they provide, CO2 emissions are decreased and the, limiting the damage to the environment.
