Main causes of roof damage

From working on them for well over two decades, DPR are well aware that roofs can be damaged in a variety of ways.

Some, for instance, develop problems after not being properly cared for, whereas poorly installed ones are simply a disaster waiting to happen from the get go.

Either way, the need to fix any roofing issues both quickly and efficiently is absolutely imperative – you, your family and/or employees are at great risk otherwise.

With this in mind, today we’re outlining three common causes of roof damage

1) Poor maintenance

As mentioned above, not looking after your roof will come back to haunt you in the future. Routinely checking over things shouldn’t take too long, and it’ll certainly help you to save on repair costs.

2) Wear and tear

Unfortunately, like most things in life, roofs don’t last forever. Given that they’re subjected to extreme weathers throughout the year, it really should come as no surprise that the structures will accrue wear and tear at some point.

3) Installation

Reputable Leeds roofers are highly sought after for good reason – inexperienced, unqualified engineers will end up causing you more hassle than they’re worth. This is certainly the case when it comes to installing an entire new roof.

As a company, DPR take this into account when employing new members of staff, and only have knowledgeable specialists as part of our team. Such commitment to providing the very best is evidenced by our accreditations, where we have been recognised by a number of the industry’s leading bodies.

Should you be based in the Yorkshire area and want to take advantage of our first class services, why not get in touch with a member of our local team today?

We care for your business

DPR roofing continue to provide support for local companies like Premium Timber in Dewsbury and AJG Insurance. The business has been working with companies like this for a number of years providing roofing support on their guttering and other roof maintenance works on a regular basis. Some people are unsure of the work we do and why it is important so below we list some of the major reasons.

Spot changes in the roof quickly

It is very important to have your roof checked regularly, especially if you are company, by specialist roofing contractors. Despite there being many benefits, the major one is that we can notice issues with your roof that you may not notice and this could prevent a major issue costing you thousand pounds.

At DPR roofing, we’ve been working with a number of other companies in the area to provide support in these scenarios. Only last week on a site, we noticed the gutters at the rear of the property were running the wrong way and this was causing water to back up. What made the situation even worse was that the guttering is close to a number of trees that were dropping leaves and this meant that the gutters required cleaning every 3-4 weeks just to remain functional.

So what does it include and cost?

Commercial roofing packages like the ones that we provide start for a nominal fee and is based on size of building and regularity. This insures if you do have a problem we can be there as quickly as possible. If you are the owner of commercial property in the Yorkshire region and would like a company like ourselves to help you with roofing support please do not hesitate to contact one of our team today. Whilst we repair the damage, we also help to recommend any required works that should prevent future damage.

The importance of health and safety in roofing

Having recently read some worrying reports of roofers suffering bad falls, DPR think that now is a better time than ever to remind our customers of the importance of health and safety in our industry.

To break it down into simple terms, what we do on a day-to-day basis is understandably extremely risky if not done correctly.

We’re today outlining exactly why this is, along with explaining who benefits from stringent industry guidelines:

You and your family

A poorly completed roofing job doesn’t just place you at risk, but it also poses a danger to anyone living in the property. All well-respected and credible companies will not leave the area until everything is completely secure. If a permanent solution cannot be found immediately, for example, then at the very least a temporary fix will be issued.

Your property

As roofs can rapidly deteriorate over time, we consider a level of urgency to be absolutely necessary. Issues such as a leaking roof can gradually worsen, and may even result in some of your home’s contents getting damaged. With the amount of technology seemingly present in every modern day property nowadays, this is a huge worry.

Employees

Being leading Leeds specialists, DPR care about every single member of our local team. To ensure that they remain safe throughout the entirety of their careers with us, all members of staff are fully trained and qualified to do the job that they do. The regular site inspections that we undertake also guarantee that our standards never slip below what we deem to be acceptable.

As is evident from reading our health and safety page, DPR are completely committed to abiding by all necessary rules and regulations. Achieving accreditation at a number of nationally trusted bodies is further evidence of this.

Should you be based in the the Yorkshire area and require any help whatsoever with your domestic or commercial roof, please feel free to give us a call.

DPR provide gutter clearance services for Unity Housing

After announcing back in March 2015 that we had started providing roofing services for Unity Housing, we have since been involved in roof renewals, multi gutter clearance and roof repair work throughout Leeds for the housing association.

Ensuring your guttering is clear of debris is vitally important and only last month we were called out to a property where you could not see the gutter such was the volume of weeds and debris inside.

The Chapeltown Enterprise Centre offers business spaces to local companies and can provide the perfect setting for small meetings or even conference calls. Unfortunately due to a lack of gutter maintenance at the site, the water was unable to run off the roof properly and thus found another path into the building rendering the building not fit for use.

DPR were contacted to come and inspect the guttering as an emergency and it was obvious that the problem was that the water had nowhere to go. Such was the volume of debris in the gutter, grass, weeds and even a full newspaper paper had been collected in there. The debris was also at the same level as the bottom slates so there was physically nowhere for the water to go except inside.

DPR sent a team of expert gutter clearance roofers out to site as soon as possible and through a number of techniques managed to completely free all the debris from the gutter. Once this had been completed, the team also ensured that the opening was working properly, cleaning this out too and repairing any obvious issues. The roof received an overhaul of slate repairs and all was good for the building to open its doors again.

All this work was completed in a quick timescale much to the delight of the businesses wanting to move in.

This project shows how DPR can quickly come to the aid of many local businesses and we have the skills and expertise to deal with a wide range of different commercial property roof issues. For more information on our roofing services, including new roof builds, roof repairs and flat roofing, as well as garage roofing, contact us today.

Do you need a roof repair or a new roof?

At DPR Roofing we are often asked if there was anything the client could have done to spot their roof problem before it got this bad. Now in some cases you will not know there is an issue at all until it is too late, but in most cases simple maintenance each year should help reduce the risk of a major roofing problem.

There are a few things you can do however to decrease the likelihood of a major roof repair being required. Leading roofers, like ourselves, recommended checking your roof at least twice a year. Our team note some of the things to look out for during the inspection below:

Firstly, if you can safely, take to the loft area with a torch and look for places where daylight might be entering usually spotted by very visible chinks of daylight but only turning the torch off will verify this. Look for darker areas of timber which usually signifies water absorption.

After completing and internal check of the roof, now go outside and look from the ground upwards, preferably with binoculars but leave ladder inspections to the professional roofers.

It is critical you pay attention to things like missing and slipped tiles/slates, damaged lead flashings, guttering issues and much more. Obviously only a roof inspection by a professional will confirm what is exactly needed.

These are just some basic tips for checking your roof every six months. If you are not sure how to do any of this, DPR offers a property maintenance programme where we will commit to checking your roof at least twice a year looking for any signs of damage.

For more information on this package please do not hesitate to contact us today.

DPR delighted to hear house building has doubled since 2009

DPR Roofers, specialist roofers in Leeds, are delighted to hear that house building has doubled since 2009 and are at their highest levels in 2007.

In the latest report from the UK government, the figures show that both the starts of house builds and the completions have increased over the past 12 months. The same data also shows that in the past 3 months, the house build starts are up 31% compared to the previous quarter and 11% compared to last year. Completions are also up to a six year high.

In a statement, the housing Minister Brandon Lewis said: “House building is at the heart of our plan to ensure the recovery reaches all parts of our country. We’re turning around an industry that was devastated and getting the country building again.

“These figures show these efforts are reaping results, with house building starts having more than doubled since 2009, and completions at their highest for nearly six years. It is vital we maintain this momentum, getting workers back on sites and homes built, giving more people the chance to own their own home.”

DPR are delighted to hear of this news as although it sounds obvious, every house must have a roof and this gives us opportunities to work with housing developers. We are leading experts in domestic and commercial new roof builds across the Yorkshire region.

Plans for new homes continues to grow

Yorkshire roofing company, DPR, welcomes the new figures released by the NHBC, which reveal that numbers of new homes registered in the UK in February are up by 25% over those registered in February the previous year. This is good news for people looking to buy a new home this year, and good news for those in the construction and related industries.

The NHBC figures show that 11,734 new homes were registered in the UK in February this year, compared with 9,390 in February last year. February 2014 showed a particularly low result in house registration numbers, and premier Yorkshire roofers DPR are pleased to see this encouraging increase. NHBC is the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes and their registration figures are a reliable indicator that the UK home building industry is enjoying a period of sustained growth on last year’s figures. Over the rolling quarter, December 2014 – February 2015, 36,505 new homes were registered in the UK, compared with 29,681 for the same period in 2014. This is an encouraging rise of 23%. The greatest increase is in the private sector, which showed a massive increase of 32%, while the public sector, in contrast, managed an increase of only 1%.

NHBC Chief Executive Mike Quinton warns against complacency, though; “We have been clear that we are building way below the level of homes that our country so desperately needs.” he says, concluding that “ it is important that we keep up this momentum.”

Yorkshire roofing services company DPR, with 20 years’ experience in roof repairs throughout the Yorkshire area, agrees that these new homes are good news for the UK. If you are looking for a professional roofer anywhere in the Yorkshire area, you can have confidence in Yorkshire’s first class roofers, DPR.
